S.O.A.P. is an acronym for a method of Bible Study. There are several others, such as W.O.R.D. or R.E.A.P., but S.O.A.P. does it for me! Here’s everything you need to know when applying the SOAP method to your Bible study:
S is for scripture.
Part of my full Bible study routine is note taking. In my journal, I date the page, write the scripture I’m focused on during that session, and hand write the one or two verses that stuck out to me most. If I’m feeling extra crafty, I’ll create scripture artwork using fancy hand lettering and stickers or washi tape.
O is for observation.
Next, I read over my selected verse or two and think. What stands out to me? What is God’s truth revealing here? Are there any words being repeated or emphasized? What’s the significance of this passage?
In observing, I also make note of historical references. When did this take place: Old or New Testament? Who’s speaking? Who is the author addressing? What is the cultural context? This is when a quick Google search or look at my Bible timeline poster helps.
A is for application.
When I’ve finished jotting down my observations, it’s time to reflect on them. How does this scripture relate to my current situation? This is a gut check question for me. Am I living day to day in alignment with God’s Word? If not, how can I? If I already am, have I given Him praise and adoration for such blessings?
P is for prayer.
After all that, my heart is usually pretty full… and heavy. With that said, I take it to God! I pray through my scripture observations and applications. It’s important that I thank the Lord for His wisdom and message. I ask Him for blessings and a soft heart as I do the work to make the necessary changes in living a more fulfilled Christian life.
And that’s the SOAP method for Bible study! Everything gets recorded in the same notebook with the same structure so I can easily go back and reflect on previous studies, add notes to answered prayers, and so on.
