What is the Teal Pumpkin Project?

The Teal Pumpkin Project is all about inclusivity. It’s a movement that encourages us to provide allergen-free treats to trick-or-treaters. This is such a wonderful initiative because it ensures that every child can enjoy the magic of Halloween without worrying about food allergies. As a special education teacher and curriculum designer, I am all about making every child feel valued and included, both in and out of the classroom.

How can I be more inclusive this Halloween?

If you’re an educator, you may be asking: what does the Teal Pumpkin Project have to do with teaching? This spooky season, consider your food-sensitive students when planning Halloween parties. Apply the same Teal Pumpkin Project philosophy to your fall festivities! Think of some fantastic candy alternatives for kiddos with allergies. Eliminate the sugary snacks altogether. Get creative spreading Halloween joy with nonedible treats! Here are some low-cost ideas:

  1. Stickers and Temporary Tattoos: Who doesn’t love a fun sticker or a cool temporary tattoo? You can find a variety of spooky and fun designs that kids will adore. My middle schoolers thought these vinyl ghost stickers were BOOtiful for decorating HydroFlasks and Stanleys!
  2. Glow Sticks: Halloween wouldn’t be the same without a bit of spookiness. Glow sticks add that perfect touch. Plus, they’re nontoxic and safe! For added fun, turn out the classroom lights, add a blacklight, bust out fluorescent highlighters, and let students work by the light of their glowsticks.
  3. Miniature Toys: Consider handing out small toys like bouncy balls, mini figurines, or even small puzzles. They make for great non-food treats. Last year, we gave out mini packs of Pokemon cards. I brought the leftover packs to school. I kid you not: ALL grade levels I service went absolutely nuts for them! Find what your students like and use it to your advantage.
  4. Halloween-themed Erasers: These are not only adorable but also practical for school-aged children. They can use them in their classrooms! And let’s be real: it’s around this time of the year when school supplies start to go missing.
  5. Pencils and Notepads: Continuing with the school theme, Halloween-themed pencils and notepads can be a hit with creative minds. Most kids love having a spot to doodle!
  6. Bubbles: Who doesn’t enjoy blowing bubbles on a crisp Halloween night? They add an extra layer of fun to kids’ spooky evening!
