Fun Things to Do with Little Kids in Monmouth County This Summer

July 6, 2025 4 min read

Looking for fun, budget-friendly ways to keep your toddler entertained this summer in Monmouth County, New Jersey? Whether you’re chasing giggles, hoping for hands-on learning experiences, or just need to cool off and burn energy, you’re in good company—and the right place!

As a local mom to a very active one-year-old, we’ve been trying all the things lately—from baby storytime to splash zones and indoor play spaces. If you’re looking for toddler-approved outings, local events, and summer pass deals that stretch your dollar (and your sanity), keep reading for my favorites!

🐮 Monmouth County Library: Storytime, Crafts, & Animal Encounters

One of my top picks for FREE toddler fun? The Monmouth County Library system. Their branches offer events almost daily for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers—and they’re so much more than books!

Just last month, we met a miniature Highland cow at the Marlboro branch—and my toddler, Gem*, was mesmerized. From live animal encounters to music-and-movement sessions, the events are engaging and age-appropriate. The variety keeps things fresh and exciting all summer long. Here’s just some of what to look out for this summer:

  • Baby & Toddler Storytimes (great for ages 6–24 months)
  • Crafty afternoons that pair books with fun, hands-on projects
  • Live shows and animal visits like snakes, reptiles, and puppets
  • Summer Reading Challenge with prizes and themed events

👉 Check the Monmouth County Library events calendar often. Some events require pre-registration and fill up quickly!

🎢 Day Trips for Some Classic Summer Fun

If you’re up for a short adventure outside Monmouth County, Sesame Place (Langhorne, PA) and Jenkinson’s Boardwalk & Aquarium (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ) are toddler favorites we return to time and time again. Here’s what you can look forward to this summer:

Sesame Place Highlights:

  • Toddler-safe splash zones & lazy rivers
  • Rides perfect for early walkers and preschoolers
  • Meet-and-greets with Elmo, Cookie Monster, Big Bird & friends
  • Live shows and parades throughout the day

Sesame Place is also celebrating its 45th birthday this summer, with bonus events and birthday fun happening now through Labor Day. It’s definitely worth a trip or two before the season’s through!

Jenkinson’s Boardwalk Highlights:

  • Indoor aquarium with sharks, seals, penguins, and hands-on touch tanks
  • Kiddie rides, mini golf, and classic boardwalk treats
  • Arcades and indoor play for rainy or hot days

These spots are perfect for a summer memory-making day trip with your toddler. Both are super manageable, even while solo-parenting. Trust me; you can do it!

🏞️ Local Outdoor Fun: Monmouth County Park System

If you’re staying local and want to get outside, the Monmouth County Park System is an absolute gem. We’ve been loving these low-key but enriching outings:

  • Seining the Bay: Catch crabs, fish, and more at Sandy Hook or Fisherman’s Cove (free and educational—just bring water shoes!)
  • Historic Longstreet Farm: Step back in time and visit animals on a working farm in Holmdel
  • Boat Tours: Ride around the Manasquan Reservoir in Howell—just $6 for adults and $4 for kids
  • Spraygrounds & Pools: Check out Dorbrook Splash Pad or the Fort Monmouth Recreation Area in Tinton Falls for open swim

🌿 PRO TIP: Pack towels, sunscreen, snacks, and a change of clothes—especially if you’re hitting splash zones or the bay!

🕹️ Dave & Buster’s Summer Season Pass

  • Unlimited gameplay sessions through Labor Day
  • Food and drink discounts included
  • Attached to the Freehold Raceway Mall for convenience

It’s perfect for indoor play on those too-hot-to-handle days! The Freehold location is still fairly new and well-maintained. Our toddler has no idea how to play arcade games, but he loves pushing buttons and the bright lights!

🧸 Gymboree Play & Music – Howell

  • $150 Summer Pass for 10 classes & open play (July–August)
  • Great for infants through age 5
  • Safe, clean, and perfect for burning off energy

We’ve been attending the open-gym sessions weekly—it’s a toddler paradise with climbing mats, bubbles, and songs. Bonus: my little one naps so well afterward!
