Our Family Adventure to Niagara Falls Canada

August 14, 2025 4 min read

Earlier this month, our family headed to Niagara Falls, Canada for an extended weekend vacation. Long story short: It was a trip full of awe, excitement, and memorable moments. Long story long: It was Matt’s first time in Canada — and at Niagara Falls — as well as Gem’s first visit to Canada, making it his second country visited outside the U.S. at just 14 months old!

Whether you’re traveling with toddlers, young kids, or just looking for a stress-free itinerary, our trip was proof that Niagara Falls can be both magical and manageable. Here’s our complete family travel guide.

Our 4-Day Niagara Falls Family Itinerary

We planned to make the most of our time while also keeping the trip manageable with a small child.

  • Day One: A travel day, spent mostly driving from New Jersey to Canada.
  • Day Two: Exploring some of the Niagara Parks area, including the Journey Behind the Falls and Power Station at Night.
  • Day Three: Finishing our excursions, with stops at the White Water Walk, Whirlpool Aero Car, and Butterfly Conservatory.
  • Day Four: Another full day of driving back home.

With so much to see, we wanted a plan that was flexible but fun. Enter the Adventure Pass from the Niagara Parks system!

The Adventure Pass made exploring stress-free. It included admission to several key attractions and unlimited rides on the WEGO bus system, which meant no parking hassles. With a toddler, this was a lifesaver! Moreover, it also came with a cute (and free!) attraction passport you could collect sticker “stamps” for each Nigara Parks location visited.

MOM TIP: Skip the stroller for most attractions. Many are crowded, wet, or better explored without wheels. A baby carrier or hip seat is ideal — it saved my back and kept Gem* safe on slick walkways.

Journey Behind the Falls: Up Close with Nature’s Power

One of our first stops was the Journey Behind the Falls. Walking through tunnels that opened up right behind the cascading water was such an incredible experience. The roar of the falls, the mist on our faces, and the sheer power of nature left us all amazed. Gem’s curiosity was at full peak, and Matt kept remarking how much better it was in person than he ever imagined.

Power Station at Night & Clifton Hill Fun

Though not included in our pass, we purchased a boat ride through Niagara City Cruises. The Hornblower got us spectacular views of the Niagara Gorge, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls, culminating in an up-close encounter with the iconic Canadian Horseshoe Falls! It was a very memorable (and wet!) experience. We then returned to the hotel for a change of shoes and the stroller.

From there, we explored Clifton Hill’s area, a lively place filled with attractions, quirky shops, and animatronics that Gem absolutely adored. Watching the animals come to life during our Rainforest Cafe dinner brought a spark of wonder that kept him entertained and amazed the entire meal!

With full bellies and a subdued child, we visited the Power Station & Tunnels at Night, which was breathtaking. Hands down, this was our favorite Niagara Falls location. Colorful lights reflected on the water, creating a magical evening atmosphere. The tunnels are considerably cooler than the scorching hot sun and paved, which made for a nice summer stroll with Gem.

Butterfly Conservatory at the Botanical Gardens

The next morning, we boarded the WEGO buses headed north and visited the Butterfly Conservatory at the Botanical Gardens. Walking among hundreds of butterflies in a lush, tropical environment was magical. Gem loved spotting butterflies landing on the fruit feeders. It gave us a sweet, slower-paced moment to enjoy the beauty of nature… mainly because he started to lose it, haha. We took the opportunity to let Gem explore the Botanical Garden grounds with his own little legs after a quick snack break in the grass.

Whirlpool Aero Car & White Water Walk

We journeyed south from the Botanical Gardens to the Whirlpool Aero Car for a thrilling view of the swirling whirlpool below. The cable car ride offered a unique perspective that made us feel like we were floating over a miniature world of water and rock. From here, we hopped back on the WEGO bus to the White Water Walk. Walking along the boardwalk beside the raging rapids gave us a front-row seat to the Niagara River’s untamed energy. These are class V rapids we’re talking about! It was wild to see that kind of natural power up close.

Family Travel Tips

If you’re planning a trip to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, the Adventure Pass and the WEGO bus system are lifesavers for families with small children. And for tiny tots, baby carriers make wet excursions, long walks, and busy attractions much more manageable. Trust me: your back will thank you, and your little one will enjoy the freedom to explore without being confined to a stroller! When all else fails, have plenty of snacks on hand.

Why Niagara Falls is Worth the Trip with Kids

Niagara Falls is more than just sightseeing; it’s a multi-sensory experience! From the roar of the falls to the gentle beauty of the butterflies, it offers something for every age. Traveling with our toddler made us slow down, savor the views, and enjoy each little moment even more.

ACTIONABLE STEPS: If you’re looking for a family-friendly travel destination that’s easy to navigate and full of wonder, Niagara Falls, Canada should be at the top of your list! 🍁 Got something to say? Don’t be shy; leave your questions/comments in the section below!
