Prodigy English is the newest educational game from Prodigy Education! Itโs a fun and creatively-driven game that motivates students to practice curriculum-aligned English skills. I’ve been a longtime supporter of the Prodigy Math Game so I knew the English component would be just as well thought out and executed. If you’re unfamiliar with the new game, have no fear! As a Prodigy Global Ambassador, I’m here to educate teachers on the platform. Please let me know in the comments below if you have any questions about getting started!
Who should play Prodigy English?
Primary-aged children looking to expand their language arts and literacy skillset will benefit from the game. Prodigy English covers a wide range of core skills, including reading, rhyming, phonetics, and spelling for grades 1-5. (Middle school teachers, be patient: future expansion up to grade 8 and more skills are in development at the time of this post!)
What’s the benefit for educators?
As your classes play the game, data automatically appears in your Teacher Portal. You can then track student progress and set assignments in the same way youโve been used to. Two subjects, one dashboard! If you’re familiar with Prodigy Math, Prodigy English should present with little to no learning curve. And, as always, the educational components of the game are FREE, making this a cost-effective resource for classrooms.
How does the game work?
Similar to Prodigy Math, the learning and gameplay experiences of Prodigy English are intrinsically connected to maximize motivation and learning outcomes. Prodigy English is a fun and engaging open-world game which allows students to build their own online world. Theyโll collect supplies while exploring an exciting, interactive environment… and learn core skills along the way!
What are students working for in Prodigy English?
As part of this experience, students will encounter two important game mechanics: Wishcoin and Energy.
Students receive Wishcoin for completing both daily and lifetime tasks in-game. Wishcoin can then be used to unlock new items and more! Tasks include crafting specific items, chopping trees, or smashing rocks for resources. In order to complete these tasks, students need Energy!
Energy is earned as students answer skill-building and curriculum-aligned English questions. (Students initiate energy use with the thunderbolt icon on the toolbar.) The more Energy earned by a player, the more they can explore and build their online world, helping to connect English learning directly to a fun and motivating gameplay experience!
