Shiny Object Syndrome: 3 Things To Consider

January 9, 2022 2 min read

Do you ever fall victim to “shiny object” syndrome? You know what I’m talking about: that feeling you get when you know you should be doing ABC but then you see the new and exciting XYZ and it makes you reconsider your current life choices.

What’s YOUR shiny object? Maybe it’s a new fitness program that just launched and has you quitting yet another exercise routine midcycle. Maybe it’s the latest Tik Tok dance that stops you mid-scroll and has you practicing those trendy moves for 4+ hours to post.

For me, it’s social media in general, hands down. Running an online business, social media is a necessary evil. Just when I think I’ve got one figured out, a new one pops up and I get overwhelmed. I’m still not on TikTok and have only just begun creating Instagram Reels… but if I’m honest with myself, the return on investment isn’t worth it. I spend hours on social media due to FOMO: fear of missing out on the next

Whatever the distractable thing(s) in your life might be, do you know which ones to pass by and which ones to invest in? I’ve got an SOS for your SOS! Here are three questions to help you decide if that shiny object is really worth your time:

1) Does this shiny object align with my current goals and plans?

Keep your eyes on the prize! Most of the time when we start looking at new ideas, it is because we have lost sight of our endgame. The novelty has worn off, and now those go-getter goals look a lot like boring burdens. Before deciding if a shiny object is right for you, make sure it fits your current game plan in a way that makes sense.

2) Will this shiny object help me better connect with family/friends/clients?

Relationships matter. Life is meant to be shared and experienced with those we love most. Don’t get so busy doing you forget to just be. Does this shiny object sacrifice quality interaction with your audience, whoever that might be? Is this opportunity “on brand” with your authentic self? If not, it’s probably best to pass on such a shiny object. Not all that glitters is gold!

3) Do I have the time and resources to invest in this shiny object right now?

Know yourself. Sometimes, less is best. Are you already feeling stretched too thin with the programs and resources you are using now? If so, then it might not be the right time to add something else to your full plate. If your current systems and automations are running smoothly and you think you have the time and energy to try something new, then go for it!

ACTIONABLE STEPS: Identify the distracting thing in your life. Use the three questions above to combat shiny object syndrome. Keep focused on what matters most!
