Okay, Disney families, let’s talk about Animal Kingdom. This park does character meet-and-greets differently than anywhere else at Walt Disney World, and I don’t think it gets enough credit for it!
This is the one park where Mickey and Minnie trade their classic looks for safari khakis, where you might stumble on Russell from Up wandering the trails with zero warning, and where a certain hula-dancing meerkat might just talk you into a dance of your own. If you’re the kind of family that loves a good character moment (and let’s be honest, who isn’t?), Animal Kingdom deserves a real spot on your itinerary, not just a quick pass-through on your way to Pandora.
Here’s everything your family needs to know to track down every character experience this park has to offer, plus the insider tips I share with my own clients when I’m helping them plan their day.
How to Find Characters Using the My Disney Experience App
Before we get into the who and where, let’s start with the how. Characters move around throughout the day, so the My Disney Experience app is your best friend for real-time locations and times.
- Tap the map pin icon at the bottom of your screen.
- Swipe left at the top of the screen and select Characters.
- Tap Locations and choose Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park.
- Find characters on the map, or tap Show List in the bottom right for a full rundown.
- Tap on any character to see exactly where and when they’ll be appearing that day.
PRO TIP: Check the app first thing in the morning and again after lunch. Times shift throughout the day, especially for the rotating characters in the Oasis!
The Oasis: Storybook Character Meets Right at the Entrance
Most guests rush straight past the Oasis on their way to the rest of the park, and honestly, that’s a big mistake. Slow down here! This little corner of Animal Kingdom holds some of the most unique character moments in all of Walt Disney World.
Rafiki and Timon
Your clients might run into a wise old mandrill or a certain meerkat who loves to hula. Rafiki is on hand to show guests the way, and when he steps away for his meditations, Timon takes over the fun (and might just be convinced to bust out a dance move or two). Both characters typically begin greeting guests about an hour after park opening and rotate roughly every 30 minutes.
Pocahontas
This is one of the most unique character greetings anywhere at Walt Disney World Resort. Head right when you enter the Oasis, just before the bridge to Discovery Island, and you’ll find Pocahontas tucked into a beautiful, natural setting that fits her adventurous spirit perfectly. It’s a gorgeous photo moment that a lot of guests walk right past without realizing it’s there.
Discovery Island: Zootopia’s Finest Are on the Case
Officers Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are on duty! Head over to The Gathering Spot near the Tree of Life, just outside Zootopia: Better Zoogether, to meet Animal Kingdom’s busiest crime-fighting duo.
HEADS UP: This is currently one of the most popular meet-and-greets in the park, so build in extra time in your schedule. If it’s a priority for your family, plan to visit earlier in the day before the wait grows.
Discovery Island’s Hidden Gems: The Up Gang
While your clients are exploring the Discovery Trails, keep an eye out for Russell from Up! His appearances are one of the park’s true hidden gems, and here’s the fun part: they don’t always show up in the My Disney Experience app. You’ll want to channel your inner Wilderness Explorer to track him down. For the best odds, enter the Discovery Trails to the left of the Tree of Life, just before the bridge to Africa.
Kevin and Dug also roam Discovery Island on their own unpredictable schedule. Kevin’s bright, vibrant colors make her hard to miss, and if you catch Dug, be sure to ask him if he’s seen any squirrels. Thanks to his special voice box, he just might answer!
PRO TIP: Because these three don’t follow a posted schedule, treat them as a delightful magical bonus rather than a must-do. Build your day around the confirmed meets, and let Russell, Kevin, and Dug be a happy surprise if you spot them.
Ready, Set, Play! Bluey and Bingo at Conservation Station
This one isn’t a traditional character meet-and-greet, and that’s exactly what makes it SO fun. Hop on the Wildlife Express Train at Harambe Station, near the exit of Kilimanjaro Safaris, and ride over to Conservation Station for a one-of-a-kind play experience with Bluey and Bingo!
Your family can dance, play, and interact with the pups through games like Magic Asparagus, Keepy Uppy, and the Octopus Game. It’s an especially great stop for younger kids who need a break from walking and a chance to be silly for a bit!
Safari-Ready: Character Photo Ops You Won’t Find Anywhere Else
Disney’s Animal Kingdom is the only park where your family can see Mickey and his pals dressed for adventure. The safari outfits alone make the meet-and-greets here worth planning around!
Start your day with Donald and Daisy Duck, dressed for a safari right in the Oasis. After entering the park, head right toward Garden Gate Gifts to find them. From there, make your way to Adventurers Outpost near the bridge to Asia, where Mickey and Minnie are waiting in their own khakis and safari hats. Keep going into Asia, turn right after you enter, and watch for Goofy and Pluto in their matching adventure gear.
PRO TIP: If character photos are a priority for your family, these safari outfits are genuinely once-a-trip material. Plan your route through the park to hit the Oasis, Adventurers Outpost, and Asia earlier in the day, before lines build.
My Top Planning Tips for Character Meets at Animal Kingdom
I’ve helped a lot of families plan their Animal Kingdom days. Here’s what consistently makes the character experience smoother and more magical:
- Don’t skip the Oasis. It’s easy to rush past on your way to Pandora or the safari, but slowing down here gets you Rafiki, Timon, Pocahontas, and Donald and Daisy, all in one relaxed area near the entrance.
- Check the app more than once. Character times shift throughout the day. A second look at MDE after lunch can save you a wasted trip across the park.
- Give Zootopia extra time. Judy and Nick are one of the most popular meets in the park. Build in buffer time or plan to visit early.
- Treat hidden characters as a bonus. Russell, Kevin, and Dug don’t run on a schedule. Let them be a happy surprise rather than the center of your plan.
- Save Bluey and Bingo for a midday reset. The Wildlife Express ride and play experience at Conservation Station make for a perfect air-conditioned break when little legs (or patience) need it most! Trust me on this one.
