Hey there, my fellow pet-loving pals! Are you ready to capture some paw-some holiday moments with your furry friends? If you’ve got a snuggly pup (or a curious cat!), I’ve got some tail-wagging pet photo tips and tricks for capturing picture-perfect memories!
Photoshoot Prep
- Walk the Walk! – Energize and relax your fur baby with a pre-shoot walk. A bit of exercise can help them feel calmer and more willing to strike a pose! Our Australian Cattle Dog mix, Molly, is a ball of anxious energy; she NEEDS her walkies to ease the tension. Perry, our senior German Shepherd, is much easier to manipulate (aka pose) when he’s tired. Take a walk; you’ll be glad you did!
- Allow a Bathroom Break – Avoid unexpected pit stops mid-shoot by making sure your pet has done their business before the camera clicks. Our dogs almost always go on our walk. If not, they go soon thereafter once everything has loosened up. It makes for a less stressful shoot for both humans and animals when business has been taken care of.
- Have Snacks on Standby – This is the holy grail of my pet photo tips: keep your pet’s favorite treats handy as rewards for good behavior. I’m also not past bribery. Treats can be a great motivator for keeping a pet’s attention focused on the camera! (A squeaky toy or favorite word may also help.)
Setting the Scene
- Comfort is Key – Choose a familiar and cozy setting for your photo shoot. Your pet will feel more at ease in a familiar environment, reducing stress and making for better photos. If you’re opting for a studio setup, be sure to have familiar faces off camera to soothe your pet.
- Embrace Natural Lighting – Utilize natural light whenever possible for soft, flattering photos. Consider shooting near a window or outdoors to capture that warm, natural glow. Professional studio setups will often utilize bright lighting equipment. Try and expose your pet to flash photography before your photoshoot!
- Fetch Some Festive Props – Incorporate holiday-themed props to add some flair to your photos. A professional photographer will probably have a scenic setup, but don’t be afraid to bring your own supplies or DIY at home! Think Santa hats, reindeer antlers, or even a simple string of fairy lights!
During the Shoot
- Practice Patience & Positivity – Remember to stay calm and patient with your pet throughout the photoshoot. I know my dogs are very sensitive to our human family’s emotions. Your energy flows down through the leash! Positive reinforcement and a relaxed vibe will help them feel comfortable and more willing to cooperate.
- Get on Their Level – Get down to your pet’s eye level for a more engaging and personal angle. I love the intimacy of shots like this; you can literally feel and see the love! This approach often captures your pet’s unique perspective and personality.
- Capture Candid Moments – Sometimes, the most precious photos come from unexpected, candid moments. I find it best to have humans hold a pose and let the pets be pets! Click away while expecting half to be outtakes. Photos during unstructured times like playtime or when your pet is in their element can result in priceless moments, too.
After the Snap
- Edit with Care – Use editing tools to enhance your photos subtly. Adjust lighting, colors, and contrasts while keeping your pet’s natural look intact. I like using my phone’s picture software, but there’s also apps like Snapseed and Lightroom to the rescue!
- Share the Love – Spread the joy by sharing these adorable moments with friends and family. Consider creating a themed digital card or sharing on social media to brighten everyone’s day. Our loved ones look forward to our annual holiday cards for this reason! One questionably busy year, we didn’t send cards and folks about lost their minds assuming the worst. I wish I were kidding.
ACTIONABLE STEPS: Remember, the goal is not just to snap a perfect picture but to create wonderful memories with your beloved furry family members! Relax, have fun, and enjoy the holiday photo session with your adorable pets. ๐๐พ
